Bulemie‏

When life makes you want to throw up!

People who eat and throw up have not found the life they enjoy. According to the estimates, more than three million women suffer from bulimia nervosa (the dark figure is assessed to be more than six million) which got a bit more publicised because of princess Diana, among others.

Bulimia nervosa is a psychological disease and rates among eating disorders. For those affected, eating is a means to manage problems and tensions and relieve unpleasant feelings.

CONSEQUENCES

Along with the emotional suffering there are also a number of severe physical damages which can develop, e.g.:

  • lack of vitamins and minerals
  • tiredness
  • muscle cramps/ muscle weakness
  • unbalanced acid-alkaline balance (stomach acid)
  • damaged oesophagus and stomach
  • tooth damage
  • early osteoporosis
  • hair loss
  • extremely dry skin
  • inflammation of pancreas (diabetes)
  • circulatory problems
  • concentration problems
  • constipation
  • abuse of laxatives
  • irritable stomach/colon
  • damaged nervous system (neurological breakdowns may occur and a wheelchair may be required)
  • diet addiction (fear of gaining weight)

It is only rarely that people affected find their way out of this addiction alone. As soon as they have decided to reveal their “secret” of bulimia, wanting to overcome their addiction, the first step should be psychotherapy and a change of diet, in order to prevent permanent emotional and physical damage.

With Caroline’s holistic nutrition programme they can learn to eat healthily without gaining weight.
